History_Of_Pie

Back to 9500BC, Egyptians used to enjoy a tasty honey filling inside a cover of oats, wheat, rye and barley to make sweet pastries. Historians say the Greeks created a flour and water paste to wrap around meat so it was easier to carry on the long sea journeys. The Romans added salts and spices to preserve the flavour of the meat. Pie cooking spread through Europe with regional variations made from local foods and available meats.

However, it is the UK where pies came into their own as "the working man´s lunch". With their chunky fillings of meat, vegetables and gravy packed into delicious pastry, they provided a complete hand-held meal without the need for knives and forks.
Inhabitants of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, are known as "pie-eaters", a nickname that dates from the 1926 General Strike when starving miners were said to be eating humble pie when they were forced back to work.

The World Pie Eating Championship takes place in the town every year. Reigning champ Neil Collier took only 23.91 seconds to down his steaming meat pie.

In England there is the well-known "British pie week" which it is hold on 7-13 March. All the supermarkets and local markets offer great variety of pies and pies recipes to celebrate altogether. My favorites are the "chicken and mushrooms pie" and also the "small handmade pork-pie"...delicious!!!
