Getting_to_Know_Real_Ale

In UK one of the basic thinks you need to know, is how appreciate "good ale", if you do, the people will come along and share tips and good times...
Since I arrived here my partner has been training me in "good ale" sampling and tasting... and now i have a good selection of beers which I adore to have time to time plus having a large display of ale bottles in our kitchen it made me even proud.

For you to understand, Ale (beer) is a type of strong and light color beer. Stout is dark, sometimes sweet and with a strong taste of malt, lager o pale ale is blond beer, brown ale is black beer, mild is soft, bitter strong, special is thick and strong and shandy is beer with lemonade.

The "Real Ale" is the beer unfiltered, unpasteurised and still active on the yeast; it is irrelevant whether the container is a cask or a bottle. If the yeast is still alive and still conditioning the beer, it is "real".

Hitchin_Beer_and_Cider_Festival_2011

Last Friday, March 18th, we went to "Hitchin Beer & Cider Festival". Something totally new for me and gratefully turn as an interesting experience. The festival is organised and run by the volunteer members of Hitchin Round Table and North Hertforshire Branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale based in St Albans. This year they were celebrating 40 years of CAMRA at the Hitchin Town Hall, which was very well organised, different rooms for the different beers, ciders and perries to taste and enjoy.

"cask/real ale" is the term for unfiltered beer which is conditioned and serve from a cask. In this festival there were a large selection of cask ale form independent UK brewers.
There were also foreign beer in cask and bottles such as Trappist, Lambic and wheat beers, pale ales, brown ales and largers...plus another small and good selection of ciders and perries.

A few hints for newcomers to beer festivals:
- The souvenir festival glass is paid at the entrance with a returnable deposit if you don´t want to keep the glass.
- Speak with the volunteer staff, they will be delighted to give guidance and answer questions.
- Start with low strength beers and eat some food too.

Last year both Pint and Half Pint allow a legal measure of one "Third-of-a-pint-measure", to allow to sample more of the beers and ciders if you wish.

In any of the cask, there was a label with 3 different prices: for a Pint, half pint and a third of a pint. We tried a great assortment thanks to this new measure which is really handy :) and Mark bought a selection of nice olives to accompanied, which we really enjoyed!!!

everyone love "Toad_in_the_hole"

"Toad-in-the-hole" is a traditional English dish consisting of sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter and usually served with vegetables and onion gravy.
The origin of the name "Toad-in-the-Hole" is often disputed...and the translation into Spanish, literally means: "Sapo en el agujero".  Some people use other mix of meat instead of sausages, although as far as I am here, this is the typical way.
***The recipe is very simple and this one is in honor to my father-in-law who teaches me:
Yorkshire Puddings  (makes 12 small or a medium tray oven pan which i use for the Toad-in-the-hole recipe)
Ingredients:
100 gr plain flour
1 egg
300ml milk
olive oil
salt and black pepper

* The Yorkshire pudding butter is prepared in advance as it is rest for an hour before the better. Some people like to add 3 eggs for 4 people pudding, although i found it is really rich, so experiment yourself what better suits you.
1/ Pre-heat the oven 220ºC / 475ºF / gas 7.
2/ Mix the flour and a pinch of salt in a bowl, add the egg and half of the milk. Mix all the ingredients until the butter is smooth and homogeneous. Then add the rest of the milk gradually and black pepper as you fancy.
3/ Put some olive oil in the tray pan covering all surface and place it in the upper part of the oven. Leave it there for 3-4 min until it is really hot.
4/ With care add the butter mix and the sausages to the tray and cook at 200ºC for 30min, until the pudding is golden brown.
5/ eat it straight away and  BON APETIT!!!

Vintage_shops

I love VINTAGE (clothes, postcards...) and whenever I go, if I pass by one shop I cannot avoid to enter and have a look. In UK, there are quite a lot in most cities and with little treasures which most of the times are expensive "treasures"... Vintage_Clothes specially attracted me because the textiles and the patterns and even the mix of both (as the photo show). Most of the trends in the Fashion industry have birth in the Vintage_shops and markets around the world and it is always fascinated, combination of colors, materials, textures and items.
The photo attached to this post are from a Vintage_shop at Kingly Court, near Carnaby St in London. If you ever come to London, I recommend you to stop by this little square full of interesting shops and coffee shops...

Fish_and_Chips

There is something about this English dish that I cannot explain but I do like it. I don´t have it often which it makes it more special. Moreover, my partner told me recently that "Fish&Chips" on Friday´s lunch is a tradition, so I wanted to try it myself and today I approached a local shop that normally is full of people at lunch time, so means to me that they should be doing good stuff. Indeed, after eating with peace my dish... I can say that this was one of my best "Fish&Chips" in the UK as long I can remember now... Bon Apetit!

Buen provecho!

Road_Side_Stall

There is something i found really curious about living in UK, which is that in some little villages, local people who have gardens where they plant vegetables and had a surplus home produce, they have a little "Road side stall" outside their home to sell that over produce that they cannot handle because it would be "too much".
The stall store separate bags with different vegetables in them or individual pieces like the cabbages, cauliflowers, broccoli... and there is a blackboard with the prices in it (which are really cheap for the great quality of the stuff). Then you put the exact amount of money in a moneybox and that´s it! Easy, fast and great thing. I love them and any time we have a chance, we pass by! :)

The_Poet_of_Black

Hiya all,
one of my favorite designers ever is Yohji Yamamoto, maybe because i was always been attracted to Japanese culture and world.. moreover, he is a master even if he doesn´t like to be called such as "maestro". He is a simple man and very intelligent. I like his work, i love his words and i am always enlighten by his soul.
Today i am writing about him because he will hold a beautiful exhibition (that I will not loooose) from12 March - 10 July 2011 at another of my favorites museums in London, The V&A (Victorian and Albert) Museum, in South Kensington - Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL, +44 (0)20 7942 2000.
Here there is a video-talk about some of his work and about this future venue at V&A Museum. Hope you will enjoy as much as i did ;)

scaphoid bone fracture‏

Hello all,
unfortunately, there are times that whatever you do no matter what you are unlucky.
One thing to bear in mind with the English weather is that whenever is raining you should wear a pair of wellies or you will be silly falling down by wet stairs as I did ten days ago... so, here i am with a little bone broken on my left wrist and a purple cast on my left hand. I need to have it on for 6 weeks and hope it will cure fine as it is uncomfortable and painful sometimes.
Things to learn from this:
- Do one thing at time
- Be careful where you step on
- Don´t use your mobile while you are trying to open a door or cross a road
- Learn how to be expertise with one hand working! LOL
Anyway, time to roll on and take it easy...

Hola,
