Allotments

One of the most interesting things I discovered while living in UK is the power and social culture behind growing your own food. Most of the people who have strong idea in "growing their owns" have in their gardens an space to cultivate any kid of vegetables and fruits. However, there are other sites around the villages and cities where it is allocate for this purpose. These are well known as "Allotments" and it is basically a plot of land which can be rented by an individual for growing fruit and vegetables, for personal and family use. 

Allotment plots come in many different shapes and sizes, usually depending on the history of the area and the amount of demand for allotments locally. If you interested, you have to contact your local council and register for a plot in the allotment you might like to be. There are 15 allotment sites throughout Stevenage, providing over 600 plots for residents of Stevenage to rent. We did applied before Christmas last year and we are still in the queue awaiting for our right time. We did pass to be in 13th position to be in 5th, in only 4 months. Depending on the site there is more movement and activities, as well as benefits. 

 There is a great community created around this activity and taking on an allotment plot is not all hard work; it can have many advantages, providing fresh home grown vegetables, fruit and flowers for you and your family, free from artificial additives and at a fraction of that you would have expected to pay in a supermarket or greengrocer.

There is also the social side, meeting new friends with similar interests and enabling you to enjoy a healthy outdoor life with gentle exercise and a place to relax and unwind. Allotments are significant to our green spaces and provide habitats for many forms of wildlife.

Una de las cosas más interesantes que he descubierto viviendo en UK es la cultura que hay detrás de cultivar tus propias verduras y frutas. Hay muchas personas que creen en esta idea y que tienen un espacio reservado en sus jardines para el cultivo de los mismos. Sin embargo, existen otros lugares para ello que se conocen como "Huerto Alquilado" y que es un terreno/parcela que se alquila de forma individual para cultivar frutas y verduras, para uso personal y/o familiar.

Estos huertos son de diferentes tamaños y formas porque a menudo  dependen de la historia de la zona y de su demanda. Si estás interesado, lo mejor es contactar con el ayuntamiento de tu zona y registrarte. En Stevenage existen 15 parcelas diferentes, en las cuales hay más de 600 huertos para alquilar por los residentes de la zona. Nosotros nos registramos las navidades pasadas y hemos pasado de la 13ª a la 5ª posición en sólo 4 meses. Dependiendo de la zona, hay distintas ayudas y beneficios, al igual que actividades sociales.

Hay una gran comunidad alrededor de esta práctica y no requiere un trabajo duro; además de posser muchas ventajas, proveen verduras y frutas frescas, flores, que tú y tu familia podéis disfrutar, libre de aditivos artificiales y mucho más barato que lo que pagas en un supermercado.

También hay un lado social en ello, y es que se conoce personas nuevas, con los mismo intereses y que te hacen disfrutar de un entorno al aire libre con un ejercicio moderado y un lugar para relajarse. Estos "Huestos alquilados" son bastante importantes para crear espacios verdes y proveer de un espacio también para el mundo animal.
